Lion Brewery, Lion Stout (Sri Lanka)
Lion Stout (formerly known as 'Lion Dark' for a while) is a fabulous and intriguing beer. The Ceylon Brewery was founded in 1881 on the island now known as Sri Lanka, and has produced a stout of huge renown ever since. One heart-warming fact is that after the devastating tsunami of 2004, Lion brewery voluntarily suspended all brewing, turning the plant over to producing bottled water to be distributed free on the island. This stout is deep, dark and chocolaty with a thick, creamy head and notes of liquorice, dried fig and molasses on the nose. This sumptuous beer leads on to a smooth, rich palate with a bittersweet quality of mocha coffee and again, liquorice, and a burnt caramel tang. It is quite a winey tasting beer, with plenty of creamy body and a long finish of bitter, tangy, dark flavours. Excellent and delicious stuff. 7.5% ABV, 62.5cl, ?3.50, Beersofeurope.
