Blue Monkey Brewery, 99 Red Baboons (England)
Brewed with Pilgrim, Celeia and "Other" hops, this unusual beer bears the legend "Is it a sort of Porter, or maybe a Mild? You decide!" And that sets the tone for a dark, Porter-style beer with a rich tan head that offers immediate scents of roasted grains and chocolate, but then a little floral and fruity tone too. On the palate it is all change, as the Porter appearance gives way to a big blast of hop character, with plenty of citrus and bitter green leaf notes that are mouth-watering, though the rich substance of the beer, that malty depth and those toasty notes broaden the dry, nicely bitter finish. Not as earth-shattering as Blue Monkey might like to make out, but enjoyable. 4.2% ABV, 50cl, 2.69, Ales by Mail.
