Box Steam Brewery, Derail Ale (England)
Box Steam is a West Country brewery that takes its name from Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Box Tunnel that runs close to the brewery. Ingredients are sourced as locally as possible, including for this India Pale Ale. It pours a burnished gold colour with thin off-white head. Aromas are immediately malty and biscuity, but fresh too with a zesty citrus note and a little glimpse of something floral. In the mouth it is medium-bodied but quite rich and chewy, the malt adding soft biscuit notes, but with plenty of oily hop bitterness checking in. The hops, with their leafy astringency, along with some lemony acidity, really freshen the finish and cut through the richness, making a second bottle of this easy to contemplate. 5.2% ABV, 50cl, Around 2.40, brewery website, tuckersonline.co.uk.
