Wye Valley has launched a bottle-conditioned version of its cask beer to celebrate 25 years of brewing in Herefordshire: HPA stands for Hereford Pale Ale. The company was founded by Peter Amor and is now run by his son Vernon. Peter is chairman of SIBA, the Society of Independent Brewers, the powerful umbrella group that represents most of Britains craft breweries. Wye Valley produces close to 20,000 barrels a year and has moved out of the ranks of the micros to become a major regional brewer.
Wye Valley, HPA (England)
HPA is brewed with Maris Otter pale malt and is hopped with Styrian Goldings and locally-grown Target varieties. The beer has a pale gold colour and an entrancing aroma of tropical fruits and sherbet lemons with spicy hops. Hop resins build in the mouth with more rich citrus fruit, juicy malt and sherbet. The finish starts fruity but becomes dry with sherbet lemons, tart fruit and light hop resins. Malt: medium. Fruit: high. Hops: high. (19.20 per case of 12 from brewery). 4.0% ABV, 50cl, 1.80-2.00, brewery website, independents.
