Brewed by the Old Bear Brewery in Keighley, West Yorkshire, this 12.5% beer follows a new American style of strong or 'double' versions of India Pale Ale. The name of the beer also celebrates the literary Brontë family who lived at Haworth near Keighley. Patrick Brontë, the father of the Brontë sisters, was born Brunty but changed his name to Brontë when Admiral Lord Nelson, whom he greatly admired, was given the title of Duke of Brontë by the King of Naples. The label of the beer shows sailors turning the capstan on the deck of a boat: there is yet another allusion in the title as Capstan F.S. recalls a ferociously strong cigarette known as Capstan Full Strength.

(RP) The bottle-conditioned beer is brewed from Yorkshire pale malt, flaked barley and torrefied wheat, with Goldings and Pioneer hops. The beer has 73 units of bitterness. It has a pale bronze colour and a sulphury nose: the sulphur gives way to powerful spicy hop notes, cracker biscuit maltiness and a hint of liquorice. Hop resins and tart gooseberry fruit dominate the palate with warming alcohol and juicy malt. Bitter hops, tangy fruit and ripe malt combine in the long finish that starts bittersweet but finally becomes dry and intensely hoppy. Malt: high. Fruit: high. Hops: high. The beer costs 3.50 a bottle. . It is also available from Wharfed Ale, Otley, W Yorks, Saltaire Wine, Bingley Road, Shipley, and from the wholesaler Boggart Hole Clough: 0161 277 9666. More outlets will come on stream in 2008: contact Old Bear for further information.
