The Fairtrade Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. There are numerous
Fairtrade wines on UK supermarket shelves, but beers have been much rarer - until now. This month's award goes to a beer that not only lives up to Fairtrade principles, but which delivers on the quality front too.
Freeminer, Fairtrade Bumble Ale (England) (RP) This is a magnificent beer and it proves that the addition of honey doesn?t mean a beer has to be sweet. It is made with malted barley, malted wheat, Fairtrade honey from Chile (23%) and First Gold hops from Worcestershire. It is the first Fairtrade beer brewed in Britain on sale in this country and is exclusive to the Co-op. The golden brew has a biscuity malt, honey and spicy hops aroma. The richness of the honey in the mouth is countered by juicy malt, spicy hops and citrus fruit. The long finish is bitter-sweet, with rich, creamy, smooth honey balanced by tart fruit and peppery hops. It is wonderfully refreshing. 4.6% ABV, 50cl, ?1.70 (TBC), Co-op. | |
